Intent

Our intent: Personal, social, health and economic education - PSHE- helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy lifestyles and to become informed, responsible citizens. We teach PSHE withthe aim to help children deal with the real ife issues they face as they grow up. We cover issues including e-safety, road safety, friendships, first aid, sex and relationships, emotional/physical health and personal finance.

At All Saints, we are committed to providing a safe, welcoming, stimulating and challenging environment, where all children develop a love of learning and strive to reach their full potential within a Christian caring community, where individuals are respected and valued. The teaching and learning principles of RSE in our school aim to ensure that everyone feels represented, listened to, cared for and have their individual needs met, regardless of any characteristic they may have.

SRE

Effective sex and relationship education -SRE- is essential if children are to make responsible and well informed decisions about their lives. Our lessons aim to provide chldren with the opportunity to learn about:

  • Physical, moral and emotional development
  • Repsecting the similarities and differences that exist between people
  • The importance of stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care
  • Sex, sexuality and sexual health
  • The names of body parts using correct terminology and how their bodies work

SRE goes beyond biological information and focuses on positive attitudes and values, developing self-esteem and the skills young people need to manage relationships. Our SRE programme has been developed in consultation with parents, pupils and staff, taking into account the age, needs and feelings of pupils. If pupils ask questions outside the scope of this policy, teachers will respond in an appropriate manner so they are fully informed and don’t seek answers online. The teaching of SRE will be supported by high quality resources and materials and delivered through a framework of themes which guarantee that children are exposed to appropriate knowledge.

Pupils will be taught in paired year groups on a rolling programme. These will be organised as follows: Reception, Year 1 / Year 2, Year 3 / Year 4, Year 5 / Year 6. This approach will ensure that all content is age-appropriate.

Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 also receive stand-alone puberty education sessions delivered by experienced members of staff. Where appropriate some elements of these sessions will be delivered in single sex groups.

Parents’ right to withdraw

Parents do not have the right to withdraw their children from relationships education, however, they do have the right to withdraw their children from the non-science components of sex education within SRE. Requests for withdrawal should be in person to the headteacher, who will explore and discuss the reasons behind such requests before deciding on the most appropriate course of action.
