All Saints' British Values Statement
Our school is committed to actively promoting British values to ensure that our pupils leave school fully prepared for life in modern Britain.
The government emphasises that all schools should ensure that they teach pupils about British values of:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
We take every opportunity to promote these values, and to ensure our pupils:
- Understand the democratic process and how citizens can have a say in decision making.
- Recognise the advantages of living under the rule of law and how law is essential for a safe society.
- Understand that there is a separation of power between the executive and the judiciary and why it exists.
- Understand that the freedom to hold varying faiths and beliefs, including no religious faith, is protected in law, and that it is vital to accept people who have different faiths and beliefs without discriminating against them in any way.
- Value the importance of identifying and combatting extremism.
We promote British values both within and beyond the classroom and these values are at the heart of our ethos. Here are just some of the ways our school seeks to embed the teaching of British values.
Democracy
Our curriculum is carefully planned so that children learn about examples of democracy throughout time and across the world. Our curriculum driver of ‘Our Place in the World’ focuses on how we treat one another and the importance of everyone’s voice. Children have regular opportunities to express their opinions and views through Pupil Voice and circle times. They also participate in democratic votes to select their class representatives.
The rule of law
The benefits of living within a society with the rule of law is explored through our curriculum. Our PSHE / SRE curriculum offers children a platform to explore the consequences of not following the rule of law and the impact that has on our society. School rules are devised together and agreed on, with the understanding of their role in ensuring everyone is safe and able to learn.
Individual liberty
Throughout the curriculum, children are given the opportunity to make their own choices. The ‘Big Questions’ that our school has threaded through every unit of work ensures that children are able to express their views, and ‘disagree well’; they show respect for the freedom individuals have to think differently to them.
Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
Pupils explore a range of different beliefs from around the world, including those who do not have a set faith. The RE curriculum is balanced and offers suitable depth for pupils to encounter different faiths. There is a sharp focus on inclusion and children are empowered to identify and discuss difference confidently, with maturity and respect. Through PSHE, pupils are taught how to think for themselves and what to do if they are made to feel uncomfortable or confused by the influence of others.
